OPC Learning Strategies, Methods & Approaches

i)   Individual Therapy

Students may have been engaged in personal therapy before entering the program and must be active in personal therapy throughout the program.

ii)  Learning Groups

Students must participate in OPC learning groups for a minimum of five years. Learning groups of 10-12 Student Associates meet every other week, except in the summer months. A minimum of 140 hours in learning groups must be attended to qualify for graduation from the program.

OPC Curriculum Subject Areas


Subject Area I Psychotherapy and counseling history, theories, concepts and practices (Learning Modules 1-5)

The purpose of this subject area is to develop a knowledge and understanding of the key foundational theories, concepts, processes, principles and practices related psychotherapy and counseling.

OPC Curriculum Overview

The OPC program is divided into 5 main Subject Areas, with 5 Learning Modules attached to each area that are typically take place over 5 years of study. They provide complementary learning for each other. All Subject Areas and Learning Modules are offered through a variety of teaching and learning strategies, methods and activities suited to preparing students to practice as a counsellor/therapist or psychotherapist.

Overall Competencies & Learning Outcomes

By the end of successful completion of the program, graduates will be expected to have integrated the theory and practice required for entry to practice as a psychotherapist and counselor. The learning outcomes and objectives of OPC are leveled throughout the program using a variety of learning modalities and strategies to develop those competencies.

Philosophy of the OPC program

The Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling program supports an open, integrated and lively “spirit of education." OPC, the faculty and facilitators believe that emotional, spiritual, intellectual and psychological energies drive the learning process for the student learner and the facilitator, mentor or teacher. We hold the belief that when the student hears the call to become a psychological healer; all of the potential ingredients to carry out this vocation already exist within the initiate.

Ontario Psychotherapy Training & Counseling Certificate Program - OPC's History

In 2000, Jo-Anne Corbeil conducted the first bi-monthly learning groups for one year and pioneered a beginning vision that was later to transform into the present Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Program (OPC). Jo-Anne invited Barbara Dewar to become a co-founder and co-creator of Espritedu Training Program for Psychotherapy Associates to expand the vision and implementation of psychotherapy training in a more formalized program.

The Ontario Psychotherapy and Counseling Program (OPC) is both a psychotherapy training program and a Psychotherapist Referral Network, with counselors and psychotherapists in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, Barrie, Northumberland, Peterborough, Ottawa, St. Catharines, Niagara, London and other regions in Ontario.
