The field of mental health and well-being is more and more requiring a multi-modal, holistic approach to the practice and process of psychotherapy. As practitioners within this diverse environment and within the growing emphasis on health teams, it is an important augmentation to a therapist’s knowledge to be conversant in, and informed about, the kinds of diagnostic categories that often are used by clients and other practitioners within the field of mental health. Furthermore, Psychotherapists regularly assess clients within the treatment setting; these processes, the need for clinical judgement and the application of decision-making models with regard to assessment ought to be part of a therapist’s rubric of practice. Determining the kinds of information, questions, and formulations for treatment planning and therapeutic goals is an essential skill-set for therapists.
