OPC Curriculum Subject Areas

Subject Area I Psychotherapy and counseling history, theories, concepts and practices (Learning Modules 1-5)

The purpose of this subject area is to develop a knowledge and understanding of the key foundational theories, concepts, processes, principles and practices related to psychotherapy and counseling.

Subject Area II Human development and psychotherapy and counseling across the lifespan (Learning modules 1-5)

The purpose of this subject area is to develop a knowledge and understanding of human development and psychotherapy across the lifespan and a developmental approach to counseling.

Subject Area III Approaches, modalities, techniques and skills for application in psychotherapy and counseling practice (Learning modules 1-5)

The purpose of this subject area is to develop knowledge, understanding and skills related to approaches modalities, techniques and skills used in psychotherapy and counseling practice.

Subject Area IV Current trends, issues and topics of relevance to psychotherapy and counseling (Learning modules 1-5)

The purpose of this subject area is to stay current with specific trends, issues and topics of relevance to psychotherapy and counseling.

SUBJECT AREA V: Clinical practice and clinical supervision (Learning modules 1-5)

The purpose of this subject area is to gain experience and supervision related to clinical practice skills and competencies to be a psychotherapist and counselor.

NOTE: These are the major subjects and content areas for study in the curriculum. Much of the material will be covered in the residencies, learning groups, discussions, independent readings and assignments. The learning will be taken further through a supervised Clinical Practicum in years 4 and 5; completion of the Concentration Study (Mastery Thesis or Project) in the final year; and discussions and consultations with a supervisor and colleagues throughout the program.
